Birding

Christine Li

Birds Beside Us
AS Christine Li

Protect the environment

Do you know how many kinds of wild birds live in Shanghai? Besides sparrows, magpies, blackbirds, can you name other species of birds?
Do you know their current living situation? And how do human activities affect them?

Withthese questions in mind, the senior bird watcher, Christine Li from AS grade of SUIS Pudong Sanlin Campus organised the "Birds Beside Us" seminar and wildbirds obervation activities, under the guidance of our UGC team. Professor Zhang from Shanghai Ocean University was invited as a special guest for the event.

Birds in Shanghai
Christine Li
As the organiser of the activity, Christine took the lead in sharing some common birds in Shanghai with the students, introducing "Water Birds", "Sea Birds" and "Land Birds" as the classification categories. It is worth mentioning that she also vividly imitated the sound of the Spotted Dove, "coo coo".

If Christine is the guide who introduces us to the world of birds, then Professor Zhanghas broughtus into the next level ofprofessional bird field from the perspective of practical exploration and research.
Starting from the concept of biodiversity, Professor Zhang introduced the concept of "citizen science", and then started from the "bird-watching" to explore the "Nanhui Longtan Wetland".Students gained a thorough understanding of the whole research process: purpose, investigation, methodology, analysis and eventual findings. This hasplanted a seed for their subsequent scientific research.
Bird Watching
Dongming Park
After the lecture, the students followed Professor Zhang to Dongming Park, five minutes" walk from Sanlin Campus, and launched a formal "bird-watching activity".
So how do we find the birds? First, "listening", follow the sound to find the birds and then observing; second, go to place with fewer people, where the birds are less likely to be disturbed. Luckily, we found our first bird of the adventure.

Birds Beside Us
AS Christine Li
People often regard the city as an artificially constructed space, with which the wildlife beside us has been neglected. However, part of nature still resides in our city, but we are losing the connection to the natural world. Nanhui, a part of Shanghai, is where 30% of bird species arefound in China, and it is now threatened by the urbanisation expansion of Shanghai.
To help our peers to learn the importance of biodiversity and sustainability while contributing to the conservation work in Shanghai, I organised this event. Through the lectures, I could arouse my peers to pay attention to the ecological environment. And through the onsite bird watching at Dongming Park, I could lead my peers to reconnect with the nature around us and enlighten them to re-evaluate our position in the world, which is the best outcome of this activity.
Be moresystematic, professional and practical.
IG2 Chen Chen
I think I have been urged by this activity - a direction to break through the bottleneck period of my current Ornithology learning; In the daily dimension, the signals recorded for birds are more systematic, professional, and practical.
I had a brief exchange with Professor Zhang on some topics related to bird behaviour, such as the predation behaviour of night herons; We also observed the behaviour of a Long-tailed shrike preying on Vinous-throated parrotbill.Professor Zhang introduced me to the group of bird surveys in Nanhui.
From now on, I hope that I can study Ornithology more actively and attentively on ordinary days, purchase bird-watching equipment, expand bird watching scope, select more suitable bird-watching sites, put forward personal bird-watching topics, alleviate the shortcomings of previous equipment as well as the limitations of observation scope and methods, and observe birds more scientifically and rigorously, so as to prepare for future study in bird ecological project.
Protect the environment
IG2 Rose Fu
I have benefited a lot from this bird-watching activity. I have noticed that there are many birds around us, and I have also learned how to distinguish their species. I have become more interested in birds. I also realise the importance of protecting the environment. I hope that humans and animals can coexist harmoniously.

Our Bird-watching Team
The ultimate goal of education is to empower our students. Bird-watching activity is not only a great way of major exploration but also a precious opportunity for our students to develop soft skills. Also, it is an example of successful parent-school collaboration. Through this event, we have witnessed Christine’s leadership potential, presentation, and communication skills. Moreover, all the participants grew in theirknowledge of birds, biological diversity, and citizen science during the activity.
We thank Christine"s mumfor hersupport, Dr. Zhang, Christine and Jonathan for their efforts, and you all for your participation.
